How does it work?
The "Science Bit"
Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of medicine. The Chinese and other Eastern cultures have been using acupuncture to restore, promote and maintain good health for thousands of years.
According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin. This energy is known as Qi (“chee”).
The flow of Qi can be disturbed by any number of factors, and when it is unbalanced, illness results. Stimulating the acupuncture points along these channels using ultra fine needles or acupressure massage, acts to balance the Qi which in turn reduces inflammation, alleviates pain, activates the immune system, releases endorphins, relaxes stiff muscles and calms the mind.
Although Western science has neither proven nor accepted the notion of Qi, a large body of evidence is accumulating indicating that acupuncture leads to real physiologic changes in the body. Numerous studies have shown, for example, that inserting needles into the skin stimulates nerves in the underlying muscles.
This stimulation, researchers feel, sends impulses up the spinal cord to a relatively primitive part of the brain known as the limbic system, as well as to the midbrain and the pituitary gland. Somehow that signaling leads to the release of endorphins and monoamines, chemicals that block pain signals in the spinal chord and brain.
Although this theory may explain how acupuncture can be used anesthetically, it does not provide an explanation as to why Traditional Acupuncture has such a profound effect on such a wide range of conditions.
