About your treatment
What to expect
Your first visit usually lasts just over an hour. You will have the opportunity to talk about why you want treatment. I will take a full case history, asking you questions about all aspects of your life, from your physical and emotional state through to your lifestyle. This enables me to draw a more complete picture of your condition than I’d have by taking only the western disease label into account. I will then read your pulses, look at your tongue and undertake a physical exam if appropriate. Based on my findings, I will choose the points to be treated that day. I may use needles, cups, moxa or acupressure massage to stimulate the points. Acupuncture needles are so fine that they often can’t even be felt. When they are stimulated more strongly (e.g. during labour induction), the sensation is often described as a momentary tingling or dull ache. It is not painful.
I may leave the needles in for up to 40 minutes or I may remove them immediately.
Response to treatment
Each individual is unique, so the response to treatment varies. While some people experience a marked improvement straight away, others may take a few days, or a few treatments for their specific problem to improve.
Treatment may:
- Relieve pain
- Improve mental clarity and memory
- Increase vitality and drive
- Improve digestion and appetite
- Create a sense of peace and wellbeing
Most people feel a deep seated sense of relaxation almost straight away. Because of this you may feel a little tired directly after your session. For maximum benefit I recommend you avoid any stressful or difficult activities for a couple of hours after treatment and that you avoid drinking any alcohol for the rest of the day.
How often will I need treatment?
On the basis of the diagnosis, and taking into account factors such as age, lifestyle and how long you’ve had the condition, I will propose a plan of treatment after your first visit.
As each person is unique, the number of treatments required depends on you. For recent or acute conditions as few as 2 or 3 visits may be appropriate. For a severe illness of long duration, it may be 5 sessions before real change is felt and even longer to resolve the condition completely.
A course of treatment usually averages out at about 10 sessions. I usually recommend treatments are once a week for 4 to 6 weeks, after which they can be spaced further apart.
